Also known as a mech hanger, mech dropout, cast hanger, mountain bike hanger and hanger dropout (the list is endless), they are designed to absorb any impact and strain that would be focused on the frame of the bike. Mech hangers will bend or break off to protect the main body of the frame, preventing any damage being done to your bike.
