A derailleur hanger, otherwise known as a mech hanger, mech dropout, cast hanger, mountain bike hanger and hanger dropout is a piece of metal that is attached to the rear axle of a bike. The main job of a derailleur is to adsorb any strain, resulting in either snapping or bending to protect the frame of the bike. This helps prevent any damage being done to the frame of the bike, which can become costly when damaged. It is always recommended that cyclists carry a spare derailleur with them wherever they go, as these can break at any given time causing an inconvenience.
