It is a small piece of metal that is attached to the rear of a bike, it is also known as a mech hanger, mech dropout, cast hanger, mountain bike hanger and hanger dropout. Derailleur hangers are designed to absorb any impact and strain that would be focused on the frame of the bike; it will bend or break off to protect the main body of the frame. Carrying a spare derailleur hanger is essential because rear mech dropouts can break at any given time, wherever you are.
